A passion with Biblical animals

Posted on February 6, 2015

Israel never ceases to amaze me.,

Every so often someone has a passion . They want to share this passion with as many people as possible. Out of this passion .. A new tour site is born .

Rabbi Nathan Slifkin is such a person . He has created and established the Biblical Museum of Natural History.

Rabbi Slifkin has always been at the forefront of studying animals and their connection to the Bible. Known as the “zoo rabbi” he spent many years working at the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo.

His studies of animals in zoos and in their natural habitats has led him to develop this new, unique and interesting site.

The museum, located in Bet Shemesh is divided into two rooms . In the first room, Rabbi Slifkin gives an introduction to the world of Biblical animals. This comes complete with a video taken while on Safari,as he explores the life of Big Game animals in the wild.

I was surprised to learn that many of these  wild animals used to roam the land of Israel and are mentioned throughout the Bible!

The curtain to the next room is then lifted.

Before us, on Display, are life size replicas of these animals. That’s right. Real ” stuffed ” animals.

These animals were acquired from various zoos, and were stuffed by the only licensed taxidermist in the country. The Displays are amazing . The animals are definitely “life-like” in every way. Lions, wolves, spotted leopards, hyenas, gazelles and more .As Rabbi Slifkin talks about each animal and their connection to the Bible and the land of Israel, you get the feeling that all these animals are treated with respect. Even the most ferocious ones. They each have an important part to play in the circle of life, as they are all Gods creatures.

For those of us who feel the need to “touch” an animal, there are some live ones as well. Snakes, hedgehogs, hyrax ,and even an armadillo can be handled. All under the watchful eyes and guidance of Rabbi Slifkin.

Let’s make sure to include this site on your next tour of Israel.. It’s an educational and fun experience for all ages.
